Browser minimum requirements

Do the online surveys work on all computers? Which browsers are suitable for completing my survey online?

Most computers and browsers can be used to complete your survey online. The surveys have been tested and optimised for use with the following internet browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 10 and 11
  • Firefox 47.0 and above
  • Google Chrome v51.0.27 and above
  • Safari 5.1.7 and above

In addition, your browser needs JavaScript enabled, SSL enabled, and Cookies enabled.

Older or non-mainstream browsers that are not standards-compliant may not perform predictably.

If your browser does not meet the minimum requirements you will need to either upgrade your browser to improve your experience with the survey, use someone else's computer, or complete your survey on paper.

My browser does not support the minimum requirements of 128 bit encryption SSL. What can I do?

You will need to either upgrade your browser, use someone else's computer, or complete your survey on paper. 

How can I find out what browser I have on my computer?

You can find out what browser you are using by:

  1. opening your browser
  2. selecting 'Help' on your menu bar or in your Tools option, at the top of your screen, or
  3. pressing the ALT key and H key at the same time.

You will see an option 'About (your browser type)' in the list. When you open this option, you will see exactly which browser and version you have.

Cookies

Do these online surveys use cookies?

Cookies are used by these online surveys. If cookies are not enabled, when you click 'Start' to load the survey, it displays the Survey help page rather than the questionnaire.

Use the following instructions to enable cookies (turn cookies on) and also to disable them. Since cookies are maintained by your web browser, the method for enabling or disabling them will vary depending on which browser you are using.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 and 11

Select the 'Tools->Internet Options' menu item, and then open the 'Security' tab - you can then adjust the slider to block or allow various categories of cookie. Alternatively by clicking 'Advanced...' you can exercise finer control over the browser's behaviour, choosing whether to accept, block, or prompt for cookies originating either on the website you are visiting (first party cookies) or originating from websites other than the one you are visiting (third party cookies, typically used by banner advertisements hosted on an advertiser's website).

Firefox 7.0 and above

Use the 'Tools->Options' menu item (may be under the Firefox button), then choose the 'Privacy' tab. Set the 'Firefox will:' option to 'Use custom settings for history'. Now you can choose whether cookies are enabled for websites you visit and for third party websites and, if enabled, for how long.  You can also use the 'Exceptions' button to override the settings for particular websites.

Google Chrome 51.0 and above

Choose 'Settings' on the 'Customize and control' menu, then click on "Show advanced settings.." at the bottom of the settings page. In the 'Privacy' section, click on the 'Content settings...' button and open the 'Cookies' tab. Set the required cookie behaviour and use the 'Manage exceptions...' button (if required) to configure specific websites.

Apple Safari 5.1 and above

Choose 'Preferences...' on the 'Settings' or 'Edit' menu (Windows) or the Safari menu (MacOS), then open the 'Privacy' tab. Now set the required cookie behaviour.

Apple iOS (iPhone, iPad)

From the home screen tap the 'Settings' icon, then choose 'Safari'. Find the 'Accept Cookies' option and set the required cookie behaviour.

Note: Disabling cookies will prevent some websites from working correctly, and may mean that you are prompted to re-enter information that would normally have been stored in a cookie.

JavaScript

How do I tell if my browser has JavaScript turned on?

The website will automatically check whether your browser has JavaScript turned on before you log on to the secure zone and begin filling out your survey.

A warning message will be displayed if JavaScript is disabled, or if your browser does not support it.

Why do I need to make sure my browser has JavaScript turned on?

Completing your online survey will be easier and faster with JavaScript turned on. In most browsers JavaScript is turned on by default.

How do I turn on JavaScript when I am using Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or Safari?

In most browsers JavaScript is turned on by default.

JavaScript settings are usually located within the Tools/Internet options for Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox browsers, and within Preferences for Safari browsers.

Search Help within your browser for your JavaScript settings. Alternatively use a common search engine such as Google to find more information about enabling JavaScript.

You can turn on JavaScript in your browser as follows:

Internet Explorer
  1. Go to the 'Tools' menu (or the settings icon on the top right of the browser), then select ‘Internet Options’.
  2. Select the 'Security' tab and then the ‘Custom Level’ button.
  3. Scroll down to the 'Scripting\Active scripting' section and select the 'Enable' radio button.
  4. Click 'OK', and 'OK' again to close the pop up box.         
  5. Restart your browser then re-enter the code for your survey. 
Safari
  1. Select 'Preferences' from the 'Edit' menu.
  2. Select the 'Security' tab.
  3. Select the 'Enable JavaScript' option.
  4. Close.
  5. Restart your browser then re-enter the code for your survey.
Firefox

Not applicable.

Chrome

Not applicable.

Linux

Will the online surveys be Linux-compatible?

The short answer is probably. While we have not specifically tested the 2016 online business surveys on Linux, we have carried out extensive browser testing on several operating systems.

The online business surveys website will work best if you have one of the following browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 10 and 11
  • Firefox 47.0 and above
  • Google Chrome v51.0.27 and above
  • Safari 5.1.7 and above

Security

How can I check the security of my internet/online session? How do I know my online survey is secure?

To see if a document comes from a secure server, check the field where you type the website address.

Once you are connected to a secure server, the website address will begin with https:// instead of http://.

In your browser, you can check your session is secure as follows:

Internet Explorer:
  • a padlock displays in the address bar or in the status bar at the bottom of your screen and denotes a secure page, or
  • choose 'File' and 'Properties' from the top menu bar. The 'Connection' information will tell you if the page is encrypted, and the level of encryption being used.
Firefox:
  • a padlock displays in the status bar at the bottom of your screen or
  • a large padlock displays on the toolbar and denotes a secure page.
Chrome:
  • a padlock displays in the address bar and denotes a secure page.
Safari:
  • a padlock displays in the upper right hand corner of the browser frame and denotes a secure page.

SSL (Secure Socket Layer)

What is a Secure Socket Layer (SSL)? How do I turn on Secure Socket Layer (SSL)?

SSL is a standard for transmitting private documents over the Internet. If you do Internet banking, you will have SSL enabled.

If you do not have SSL enabled, you cannot log on to complete your survey online.

You can turn on Secure Socket Layer (SSL) in your browser as follows:

Internet Explorer
  1. Go to the 'Tools' menu and select 'Internet Options'.        
  2. Select the 'Advanced' tab.
  3. Scroll down to the 'Security' heading and ensure that 'Use SSL 2.0' and 'Use SSL 3.0' are ticked.
  4. Click 'OK'.
Safari

SSL support is always enabled in Safari. You will not need to enable it to log on to the secure zone.

Opera

Unfortunately Opera is not one of the browsers that is supported for these online surveys. The browser has been blocked due to privacy/security issues. It is recommended that you use another browser to access your online survey.

Firefox 

Not applicable.

Chrome

Not applicable.

If you have changed the settings, you will need to restart your browser in order for the change to take effect, otherwise if SSL is already turned on, you should be able to complete your survey online.
