If you have sold, leased or purchased a farm
If you have sold, leased or otherwise disposed of your farm and have a new farm, complete a questionnaire for the farm your farming business was operating at 30 June 2024.
If you are a high-country run holder
Land use: If you have grazing land that was not being used (eg, above the snow line) at 30 June 2024, please ensure the area is included under the item tussock and danthonia used for grazing. If you have land on your farm (eg, ridge lines) which cannot be used at any time of the year, and is not plantation, bush, etc, include this land under all other land.
If you are involved in forestry, or lease land
Land use: These questions are to be completed by all farmers and forestry companies. Pleaseinclude all land you own or land leased from others as well as any land for which you had cutting rights at 30 June 2024. Do not include land leased to or used by others.
If you have plantation area that has been clear-felled or salvage-logged and the area is to be replanted, include the area under ‘harvested exotic forest area awaiting restocking’. If tthe logged area is awaiting a land use change, include the area under ‘all other land’.
Please only include all forested land that is intended for harvest, whatever the type or for whatever purpose it is being used, and record these in the appropriate place(s) in the Land use question.
If you have forest planted specifically for generation of carbon credits and not intended for harvest for wood or pulp production (Carbon Farming), include it under “plantations of exotic trees not for harvest (permanent forest).
If you have forest intended for harvest for wood or pulp production, include it under “plantations of exotic trees for harvest (standard forest).
If you have native bush on your property
Land use: If you have areas of native bush on your property, the following information will help you decide which category it falls under.
Select ‘mature native bush’ if the forest is made up of mature native tree species that are typical for that region (and those species are not changing).
Select ‘native scrub and regenerating native bush’ for land with pioneering and shrub species that are developing towards a native forest structure
If you owned livestock which were grazing on someone else’s farm at 30 June 2024 do not include these animals with your on-farm count (eg, in the case of dairy animals, in ‘Dairy cattle').
• Remember to include these animals in ‘Grazing'.
• Remember to include offspring born on the farm during the year in the relevant question.
If you were grazing livestock from another farm(s) on your farm at 30 June 2024, include these animals with your on-farm count (eg, ‘Dairy cattle'). Remember to also include these animals in ‘Grazing’.
The area grown in the year ended 30 June 2024 should be recorded in 'Grain and seed crops’.
If potassic superphosphate (potash super) or superten fertilisers were applied on the farm
Please note that the fertiliser information needed to complete this questionnaire can be retrieved from:
- Ballance’s customers can log into their MyBallance account, via www.myballance.co.nz to access "My Reports - STATS NZ Survey", or
- Ravensdown’s ‘Summary of Fertiliser Purchased’ report or from www.ravensdown.co.nz.
For farmers who do not have access to rebate notices, information for super phosphate and potassium chloride and/or potassium sulphate could be derived based on the following basic guidelines.
Products |
Percentage allocated to Potassium Chloride/sulphate |
Percentage allocated to Superphosphate |
10% Potash Super or Superten 5K |
10% |
90% |
15% Potash Super or Superten 7K |
15% |
85% |
20% Potash Super or Superten 10K |
20% |
80% |
30% Potash Super or Superten 15K |
30% |
70% |
50% Potash Super or Superten 25K |
50% |
50% |
For example, if you purchased 100 tonnes of 10% Potash Super or Superten 5K, then:
- Potassium Chloride/Sulphate = 10 tonnes, and
- Superphosphate = 90 tonnes.
